My Consumer Review: Taking the kids to watch Tangled

Leading up to my movie review:

I've had a pretty fantastical day today, hope everyone else out there in internet land can say the same. Technically, it was yesterday but I haven't been to bed yet so I still count it as Saturday. I woke up 'round 9AM after a night of drinking with no hangover. Which is a blessing in itself. Spent some quality time with the hubby. Ate cold pizza for breakfast (which in a weird way made me feel young again). Got showered and dressed. Help my hubby get the kids out of their bath. Played dress up with my five-year old daughter. How is it she can sit through a 20-30 minutes with a curling iron after she asked to me to curl her hair but she will literally hide the hair brush from us before she goes to school? Somethings not even Wiki can answer. Then headed out the door to do some grocery shopping. We ended up in the NEX because Santa was there. Got pictures of the kids with Santa and let the kids pick out a toy for the Toys for Tots program. I grabbed the last Mr. Potato Head (the one in the case) off the shelf because my two-year old son asked Santa for one. Score! Thank you Toy Story 3 for that request BTW. Another thing to make me add money to the cursing pot after it gets opened and I eventually step on in it. After that we went to the video rental and got some Christmas themed family movies. My daughter saw that Tangled was playing at the theater (it just got to our on post theater over here) and we promised to bring her there when the next showing at 1800 started.

I then went grocery shopping; had a super embarrassing episode of having to return a few items at the check out because my card got declined (turns out my insurance policy with USAA went up from $197 to $362 and lucky me I have it on automatic bill pay because set and forget it is the best way for me to pay the bills on time), just an off the subject FYI, when your stationed overseas and live in Naples, Italy and drive a domestic American vehicle that is still under lease (I pay $343 a month and it will be paid of in the next 7 months-yeah buddy!), be prepared to curse when you find out what your expected premium will be and then curse a little bit more when the rates change. My curse pot is going to fiance one of dream vacations one day. So I guess it's not really a bad thing. Anyways, moving right along past the "glad it happened to you and not to me" FML moment of the day; my husband made us a nice lunch. We played with the dog and my son took his afternoon nap. That would have been the perfect opportunity to head to the storage to pull out the Christmas decorations but Facebook nabbed my attention first. Then my Daughter wanted to play her alter-ego, "Dr. Fashion", on the web cam. So cute that I had to post it to my Facebook and keep it in the future blackmail file folder for when she turns into a snot-nosed teeny bopper. My son woke up from his nap and we all threw our jackets on and walked to the movie theater because it was about that time.

We got our popcorn and made 3 runs to take my daughter to the bathroom during the previews. We stood for the national anthem (because the MWR theater plays it before every movie shown here on the base). Took our seats and spilled popcorn everywhere at the same time somehow. The kids sat through the whole movie, just enthralled in it. My daughter even cried real tears at one point. After the movie Destiny, my five-year old daughter, asked me if she could dye her hair blond like Rapunzel. God help me! I wish there really was a magic flower or head of hair to stop the aging process.

Movie summary for Tangled (2010):

Witten By: Christina Paul

Once upon a time in a far away kingdom there lived a fair, kind and renowned King and Queen. The Queen became pregnant and the whole kingdom rejoiced. Alas, the Queen fell deathly ill and her life and the life of the unborn Princess was in great peril. The kingdom set out to find the cure to her ailment before it was too late. They searched the whole kingdom in the hopes that they could save their beloved Queen and the future Princess from an untimely end. Meanwhile deep in the forest a wicked old hag sang a special song to a golden flower that she had discovered hundreds of years before and kept secret for her own selfish purposes. This golden flower was no ordinary flower. A piece of the sun fell out of the heavens and the flower sprouted from the debris deriving magical powers. As this wicked old hag sang her special song to the flower it light up night; illuminating and casting off the surrounding shadows and replaced them with a brilliant gold light. As this special flower burned respendently with it's golden hues; that wicked old hag was magically transformed back into the younger version of herself...her wrinkled skin healed into a youthful state once more. In a haste she didn't properly hide the magically flower and the people from the Queen's kingdom stumbled across it and brought it back to the castle where they made a tonic to heal the Queen. The Queen made a miraculous recovery. Some time later they gave birth to a beautiful, health and vibrant baby girl with golden locks as bright as the sun. The King, Queen and the whole kingdom rejoiced. It was a joyous time. The day that marked Princess Rapunzel's birthday the whole kingdom participated in the celebration. The King and Queen lit a paper lantern and released it into the sky. However, someone was not celebrating that day; the younger, prettier version of the wicked old hag, Mother Gothel, had lost her luster and started to wither again. Desperate she snuck into the palace into Princess Rapunzel's nursery. She started to sing her special song and the baby's hair started to glow as bright as the sun and Mother Gothel greedily watch the wrinkles smooth from her hand. She readied her shears and cut a lock of Princess Rapunzel's hair. However, the hair instantaneously stopped glowing and turned into a shade of brunette that matched more closely to her biological parents. Outraged and desperate; Mother Gothel kidnapped Princess Rapunzel and hid her away, locked in a tower. She raised Rapunzel and taught her from a young age that she was in fact her mother and brain washed her into thinking the world that lay outside the bricks of the tower was purely evil and out to get her hair. Then skipping forward in time, Rapunzel has grown into a beautiful young lady, it is the dawning of Rapunzel's eighteenth birthday and she has spent the entirety of her life, since being kidnapped, within that tower hidden deep within the forest. While she is busing her time away, hidden high behind the bricks of the tower with her friend Pascal (a chameleon), a bandit that goes by the name of Flynn Ryder manages to steal the crown from the palace, Rapunzel's palace, and is on the run for his freedom with the castle guards (and of course the noble stead Maximilian), right on his heels. In effort to hide from Maximilian, Flynn Ryder, scales the tower and is met with Rapunzel's frying pan and is taking captive. After an explosive fight with Mother Gothel about Rapunzel dreaming to go and see the thousand floating lights that are only released on her birthday Rapunzel strikes a deal with the charming thief to act as her guide while traveling to fulfill her floating lights dream and then guide her safely back to the tower afterwards. Rapunzel then sets of to have the most magnificent adventure of her life. Flynn Ryder tires to trick and persuade a very conflicted Rapunzel to give up on her dream and go home at the beginning of the journey; freeing him of his obligation and allowing him to get his claws around the crown once more. Rapunzel sticks to her guns and they come upon the snuggly duckling, where she meets the most unlikely friends. While chumming it up with the thugs that inhabit the snuggly duckling they have a little run in with the palace guards. Bearly escaping the palace guards and the other thief's Flynn double-crossed in order to get the crown they find themselves trapped in a cave that is filling with water. There Rapunzel tells her secret of her magic hair in order to survive. Flynn accepts it and doesn't try to exploit her. While Flynn and Rapunzel start to bond and fall in love with each other, Mother Gothel is plotting with the thief's that Flynn had double crossed in effort to get Rapunzel back into her clutches. In a unfortunate turn of events, Mother Gothel's plan is successful; Flynn is apprehended by the palace guards, as is the two thief's that Mother Gothel schemed with and Rapunzel ends up running right back into Mother Gothel's evil and open arms. Some time later the memories flood back and it dawns on Rapunzel that she is the lost Princess, the very reason those thousands of lanterns are released every night on her birthday. She revolts against Mother Gothel and ends up gagged and shackled while Maximilian has staged a rescue mission with their new friends from the snuggly duckling for Ryder Flynn. Ryder Flynn escapes the stocks and races to rescue Rapunzel from Mother Gothel. He ends up being inflicted from a fatally positioned stab wound that bestowed upon him by none other than the wicked, old hag, Mother Gothel. Rapunzel fights and barters with Mother Gothel to allow her to heal Flynn. As she leans in for the kiss of true love, Flynn cuts her beautiful hair off to free her from Mother Gothel at the expense of his own life. With the magic of the golden flower dispensed mother Gothel starts to age just as fast as the magic of the golden flower had reversed the clock. Pascal trips the wicked old hag and she falls to her doom from the window of the tower. As Rapunzel cradles Flynn in her arms, she weeps, while she is weeping she starts to sing the special song. The tear drop that landed upon Flynn's cheek starts to glow and with the magic that only Disney can produce Flynn is healed. They soon go to the King and Queen and the lost Princess is found. Flynn and Rapunzel eventually marry and they live happily ever after.

My Personal Review of the movie Tangled (2010):

This is sure to be a Disney classic in the future. It was a riveting tale of tragedy, true love, great adventure, and friendship. My whole family was laughing throughout the entire movie. My five-year old daughter was swept away in the Disney magic on-screen; as I said before she even cried. The best part was both of my children were so captivated by the movie I didn't have to bring them on a potty break! My two-year old was even caught up, I didn't have to tell him to sit down once or have to chase him up and down the aisles or have to make a mid-movie trip to the concession stand for candy (which I had to do even when we took them for Toy Story 3 and they both love that movie and watch the DVD over and over and over again). I would defineatly recommend this movie to families and even single friends. It might be a little graphic for young children and parents that differ a lot from me and mine (the movie is rated PG). The whole stabbing, frying pan bashing and falling to the doom thing might be a little much for some families out there in internet land but my kids didn't have a problem with the suspense and drama; my whole family ate it up. The only thing I have that could even resemble a complaint is that I didn't think the songs were the greatest but the great story line made up for that and then some.
